40 000 get clean water in Somalia
Yme has drilled a well with a complete water distribution
system in the village of Qaidarre.10 000 people live in the area
and will have access to clean water. In addition, we completed a 23
km water pipeline from the village Gawaan down to Hobyo town. In
Hobyo area lives about 30 000 people who now have got access to
both clean and fresh water, ie, non-saline water that they drank in
the past. Because of the security situation Hobyo has suffered
scarcity of clean water for a long time and as late as in June 2011
there were cholera outbreaks in Hobyo.
Three water kiosks with 4 water taps each is installed in
different parts of Hobyo town according to the population size. In the future capable users could also receive tap water through piping with water meter they install from the main line to their houses.
This is the most comprehensive single project Yme has been implemented in Somalia so far.
The top pictures is from the evaluation of GSA / NorSom / Yme Somalia Program 2006-2010, which was made by Nordic Consulting Group in May 2011. The evaluation showed that all boreholes are in operation and have during the drought have been used by both other organisations and the authorities for water delivery programs. The evaluation also shows that the cooperation has good ties with the local authorities and particularly the clan leaders who support the projects and have ensured that the projects have been able to be feasible without major security problems and attacks.
